1 Month

I can't believe our babies are 1 MONTH OLD!! It seems like I was just pregnant last week. Although the exhaustion feels like I haven't slept in years.  We are so blessed to have such healthy babies. We are so in love.

Since I haven't done a good job over the past month capturing all the events, I thought I would try to sum it all up monthly.  I don't think we could have survived the first few weeks with 2 babies without all the help we received.
  • Week 1- Jason took off the entire week to be home with us.
  • Week 2- My sister stayed Monday and Tuesday with me during the day.  Jason took off Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday
  • Week 3- My mom stayed with us during the day.
  • Week 4- My mother-in-law stayed the entire week with us.
I don't know how parents of higher order multiples survive especially breastfeeding moms. It was really tough in the beginning but is getting much better now. I will talk about breastfeeding in a separate post- let's just say for now that I am not Bessie the cow.

Size: At the babies second weight check they were only back to just below their birth weight, which wasn't where we needed to be per the doctor.  We were strictly trying to breastfeed but we had to start supplementing formula.  We then notice a huge difference in both babies activities, sleep, and eventually their health.  By the next weight check, the following week, they had gained over a pound each.  As new parents, we were relieved and very happy with the progress they had made in just a week.

Feeding Habits: They are now getting 3-4 ounces per feeding.  We started with an once per feeding and progressed to two after two weeks (and their second weight check).  This was a major learning experience for us, and it is unreal how much they eat and how fast it enters and exits their little bodies! We have really tried hard to keep them both on the same schedule for their sake and especially ours.  I think we have done a really good job of keeping them on the same schedule.  By the third week we were close to 3 ounces and sometimes still doing 2 ounces, but now, as mentioned above, we are at 3-4 ounces per feeding and they eat every 2-3 hours.

Sleeping Habits:
Week 1 - I specifically want to point out the first night home from the hospital, because Jason and I wanted it to be just us and the babies - no help.  Boy, was that a mistake!!  ALL FOUR OF US DID NOT SLEEP FOR EVEN ONE SECOND!! It was the longest night of my life and probably the most miserable sleepless night ever.  Jason said he hasn't pulled an all-nighter like that since his college days - LOL!  I called, actually texted, my mother at 4 or 5am and asked her to please come over when she could.  Bless her heart, she came right away and has has been there for us when we needed her ever since.  The rest of week one went pretty good, I guess, as the babies were up every 2-3 hours consistently.  However, there was one period at night when they would awake and they could not be satisfied.  It was between the hours of 9pm - 1am  We think they had their days/nights confused.  Luckily, we had some very useful advise from some friends of ours that live in Dallas, TX who also have twin girls.  They told us that they were having the same problem until they decided to start "Operation take our nights back" - Ha!  They would turn every light in the house on during the day, to let the babies know it was daytime, and then turn all the light down at night to let them know if was nighttime.  We started doing this and noticed that 9pm - 1am time period was slowly deteriorating each night and week.

Foster:
-We have caught you smiling from time to time.
-You love your paci
-You are so funny and snort when taking your bottle
-While you were feeding on mommy's breast, you snatch it with your mouth. It is too cute.
-You are just starting to get chunky.  I love your little back fat.
-You LOVED your first bath!
-During your newborn pictures at 1 week, you pooped on yourself and Anna Kate. As well as on the photographer's basket.  It was terribly messy but funny at the same time.  Anna Kate was not happy with her big brother!
-You are a happy baby and easy to console.

Anna Kate:
-You are so gentle and such a little lady.
-During the first few months you loved keeping you legs and arms crossed. It is so sweet.
-You were born with so much dark brown hair.  We are starting to notice that your hair appears to be getting lighter.
-You hated your first bath but now seem to do okay although it is not enjoyable yet for you.
-You cry alot and it is difficult to make you happy.
-You get really fussy during the evening feeding around 6pm.  Mommy and Daddy think your tummy hurt and makes you uncomforable. It breaks our hearts.
-A funny note- while still in the hospital, mommy sent you to be circumcised.  It's a funny story but pretty much the nursery dressed you in Foster's blue socks. Due to the dark hospital room and mommy's lack of sleep she didn't notice.  Sorry baby girl.
-You love the activity mat. At 3 weeks old you were using your legs to lift your pelvis off the mat.
